Philadelphia Chapter

The Philadelphia Chapter of American Pilgrims covers the Philadelphia metro area, eastern Pennsylvania and central New Jersey. Broadly stated, the purpose of this local chapter is to keep members connected to the Camino and to introduce new people to the phenomenon. We plan to accomplish this in a number of ways, such as social events, hikes, mentoring future pilgrims and serving as a local host for hospitalero training through American Pilgrims.

The chapter’s activities in 2016 are highlighted in its Annual Report. We organize local hikes, talks, potlucks, a lending library of Camino related books, and more! Please visit our Meetup page for upcoming activities. Join the chapter email newsletter today for local updates delivered to your inbox. For more information or questions, please contact chapter coordinators Roy Racer and Karin Samulis at Philadelphia@americanpilgrims.org.

We are pleased to offer these resources:
       Sample packing lists and considerations
A collection of representative books for reading and reference

FORT WASHINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA
June Gathering: A Taste Of Spain
Saturday, June 3, 2017, 4:00 - 7:00 PM

Join the Philadelphia Chapter for an early evening of Spanish food and a guided wine tasting. Dr. Gary Pavlis, will be helping us learn about wines along the Camino francés. Dr. Pavlis has been a professor and agricultural agent at Rutgers University for 28 years. He has been instrumental in the expansion of the New Jersey wine industry and has served nationally on the board of directors on the American Wine Society. Dr. Pavlis writes a wine article in Edible Jersey called Liquid Assets.

As we will be tasting a variety of wines we will be having a nominal charge for the evening, simply to cover our costs. In addition we will have paella and Spanish tortilla. To round out our meal (without rounding up our costs!) we would ask that those whose last names begin with A-G bring a salad to accompany the main dish, those with names from H-O bring a desert, and lastly those from P-Z bring a beverage.

NOTE: This event requires you to RSVP! For more information, or to RSVP, please visit: https://www.meetup.com/American-Pilgrims-on-the-Camino-Philadelphia-Chapter/events/239061025/

Finally, if you will be imbibing, please team up with other attendees to have a wine-free designated driver!

DOYLESTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA
Hike and Yoga/Stretching Class
Saturday, July 8, 2017, 9:00 - 11:00 AM

We all know walking the Camino requires preparation. So, we walk and walk and spend hours going over our packing list. But what about taking care of our bodies when we are on this journey? Beyond just fueling ourselves we need to make sure we keep ourselves tuned up!

Join the Philadelphia Chapter for a two-hour, six-mile hike followed by a half hour of stretching and caring for ourselves post walk! This hike/class will be led by Marcy Lynch (marcylynchfitness.com), fellow pilgrim and fitness coach. Allowing for summer heat, we want to start our walk at 9:00 AM. Hopefully we'll be able to beat the worst of the heat!

For more information or to RSVP, please visit: https://www.meetup.com/American-Pilgrims-on-the-Camino-Philadelphia-Chapter/events/239808055/
